“Beautiful Past, Bright Future, Big News”
By Josh Griffin
Doulos Executive Director
(5-Minute Read)
Over the last twenty years, God has shaped Doulos into what it is today. In the beginning, God's vision grew on a piece of land with two old homes that were transformed into classrooms. New buildings came, along with new playground spaces. A pond and amphitheater were added. A small student body has transformed into a full Pre-K3 through 12th grade school with 300 students, and Doulos has become an established pillar of the Jarabacoa community.
So much about Doulos has changed over these 20 years, but the unique pieces of Doulos don’t go away. We still have an amazing crew of staff members that pour themselves out every day for their students. We still serve 50% of our student body with the opportunity to attend Doulos on scholarship. And, we still use those two old homes that have been a place of growth for hundreds of students over these 20 years. We also continue to use any outdoor “classroom” that we can, both on our campus and during outdoor educational activities. Doulos has always loved to get students outside - out of the box and out in nature to enhance learning opportunities.
We are excited to take those years of growth and development, as well as the unchanging essence of Doulos and give them a new level of permanence here in Jarabacoa. Twenty years in, we are not exactly the same as that first day back in 2003. But we are Doulos, with the same heart and the same desire to develop revolutionary leaders that are set apart for God. Doulos is going to continue to grow deep roots and deep relationships in this community to make an impact.
Over the next several months, you’ll hear more about this next leap for Doulos. We’ll share more of the history, the dreams, and the “why” of a move to a new location. Today I want to give you a quick picture of where God is leading us, and ask you to join us in these early steps as we move towards a new permanent home!
Many times over the years, the leadership of Doulos has considered the need for a permanent location. Over the last couple of years, the board of directors and leadership have dug deeper into this process to establish a place where the next generation of Doulos students can thrive with more space and more opportunities for creative learning in a tranquil learning environment. God brought our new location to us by way of another ministry here in Jarabacoa - a testament to collaboration and unity.
Over the coming months, we will continue to show you the deeper story of this new home for Doulos. Maybe you’ve seen the video or photos, but I’d love to paint a little picture of where we’re headed. Imagine a place where all of the beautiful pieces of Doulos are not just accommodated, but enhanced!
Let me give you a few highlights:
66 acres of mountainside land, with a school footprint area that is many times larger than our current campus.
Nearly 40 acres of forest, including areas for on-campus camping and outdoor education opportunities for students. Tranquil settings for deep learning and quiet moments with God.
A portion of land that is part of Baiguate National Park. A National Park in Doulos’ backyard? Yes! You read that correctly!
Creeks, trails, plants, and animals to be explored, increasing our on-campus expeditionary learning opportunities.
An incredible view of the valley surrounding Jarabacoa. Our students and staff will literally be able to pray over the entirety of Jarabacoa each day.
Can you picture it? Is your interest piqued? Maybe more than that, maybe you can’t wait to see what God will do with this place. We couldn’t agree more!
Join us this year with a financial gift to launch the progress of developing this new home.
God has shaped Doulos over these past 20 years, from a vision and 2 old homes, to where we are now. We know that His hand will shape this new place that gives Doulos an increased capacity for serving the Dominican Republic.

November’s Highlights
Outdoor Education
During October and November, almost every grade went on an Outdoor Ed. trip. From backpacking for the first time to climbing the highest mountain in the Caribean, these trips take students outside their regular routine to help them get a new perspective of God, creation, themselves, and their classmates.
Relational Emphasis Week
Conflict is an unfortunate part of all of our lives. This year during Relational Emphasis Week, the staff, students and their parents learned new tools to navigate conflict in a healthy, God-honoring way.
Local Leaders Investing In Future Leaders
The Athletics Department has been using sports to create meaningful relationships with local business owners. Our students have been really encouraged to see local businesses investing in what they are doing.
Thanksgiving Dinner
Our staff and their families got together to celebrate Thanksgiving. It was a wonderful night of food, music, laughter, and prayers. We are so grateful for ALL that God is doing in and through Doulos.
Join us in praying for...
Praise and Provision - God is alive and at work here at Doulos. We praise Him for His faithfulness in the past and the exciting future He is weaving together. We pray for God to move in the hearts of the people through whom He will provide the finances to make His future a reality.
God's Work Here - We are always asking God to develop the skills and character of our students and staff so that, like Yeudi, they will be ready to answer His call.
Recruitment - That God would clearly call the North American teachers and staff that He would like to come and serve here next year. If you’d like to pray over each open position, here’s a list.
Christmas Concert - On December 13th ALL the Doulos families will come to experience our Christmas Concert. Our prayer is that they will connect deeply with the life-changing reality that Jesus came into the world to show us how to live, restore our relationship with the Father, and prepare us to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Restful Break- We have all been working VERY hard to finish the semester well. We pray that during the break God will provide all our staff and students with supernatural rest.
